Why is My Air Conditioner Output Dropping?

Dependable Service Since 1926

Nothing is more frustrating than relying on your air conditioner to keep you cool and having it fail in one way or another. If your air conditioner isn’t putting out enough cool air to keep you comfortable, there could be a number of different reasons why. Read on to find out why your air conditioner output might be dropping, and what you can do to correct it.

Air Handler Issues

If your air conditioner is on, but there’s little-to-no air circulating, it may be because you have a problem with your air handler. The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that is responsible for circulating air throughout the house during operation. It is essentially a large motor with a fan attached. The air handler motor is equipped with a number of oiled bearings, which help it to run more smoothly during operation. As the bearings wear down, the friction on the air handler increases and produces a loud grinding sound. If the bearings are not replaced, the air handler motor will overheat and burn itself out.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the air conditioning system. It is the fluid that allows the air conditioner to move heat out of the house during operation. The air conditioner does not consume refrigerant, and the initial charge that it receives upon installation should be enough to last for its entire life. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, the air conditioner output will slowly drop as refrigerant is drained from the system. Eventually, the system will break down entirely due to low refrigerant levels. If you see fluid dripping from your air conditioner, call for repairs right away.
