Outlet Upgrades Your Should Consider

Dependable Service Since 1926

Your home’s electrical system is one of the most important for keeping everything running. Most of the other appliances you use rely on electrical power to operate in the first place. So, it’s a good idea to not only keep your power system in good shape, but to look for ways to improve it. One of the simplest, and best, ways to do that is to install some new outlets in your home. Let’s have a look at GFCI and AFCI outlets, and the benefits they can provide.

GFCI Outlets

Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets are designed to decrease the likelihood of electrocution due to an electrical problem. The outlet monitors the electrical current flowing through it and into whatever appliances are plugged into it. Normally, there is a balance between the current in the electrical system and the current in the appliance. A sudden imbalance is a sign that the current is flowing in a direction that it should not be, like into a person. As soon as the GFCI outlet senses this happening, it cuts off the flow of electricity. This goes a long way towards keeping you safe, in case of an electrical problem.

AFCI Outlets

The two biggest threats regarding electrical issues are electrocution and house fires. AFCI outlets help prevent the latter. While GFCI outlets are focused on preventing electricity flowing out through an appliance, arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) outlets are focused in the other direction. The AFCI outlet monitors the flow of electrical current through the walls, and will cut off the flow if the current begins to behave strangely. This helps to prevent a short circuit in the walls from igniting a house fire.
