4 Signs Your AC Air Compressor Is Failing

Denver’s heat can be harsh on air conditioners and their main components. The compressor is one of the most important parts of an AC unit. If your AC compressor is broken or failing, it can be expensive to fix, so it is important to know what signs to look for before it fails completely. A broken compressor can also be dangerous if left unchecked.

Here are four signs that your AC air compressor is failing:

1. An unusual amount of noise

An AC compressor that is working well will barely make any noise other than a low hum. However if you notice any rattling noises when switching on your AC then something is definitely wrong with the system. Any shuddering or vibrating noises are a sure sign that the compressor motor is broken and needs to be looked at by an HVAC professional from Bell Home Solutions.

2. Warm air is blowing out of the AC unit

We all want our AC unit to blow cool air on those hot summer days. But when it starts to do the opposite, something is wrong, and if nothing’s done about it, you’re in for a hot, miserable summer. This can start as a more subtle clue that something is amiss. One day you may start to notice that your unit isn’t cooling the room as well as it once was. Maybe the air flow is worse than it was when the system was new. This can seem like no big deal. However this problem can grow to be more serious if left unchecked, and suddenly you may notice that the unit is actually blowing hot air into the home.

Excess warm air coming out of the AC is a sign that the compressor is damaged and needs replacing. However, it can also be a sign of a less serious problem that is easier to fix; it may just be the case that the system is low on refrigerant liquid. This is why it is important to have your AC compressor regularly serviced and to do home maintenance on it as well.

3. Leaking

Refrigerant leaks are not as serious as a broken compressor. However, a leak could still be a symptom that the compressor is not operating properly. If there are any unusual pools of liquid either inside or outside where the back of the unit is located, then liquid may be leaking from the compressor.

Another sign of leaking could be rust or corrosion on the outside of the AC system. It’s important to check for these more subtle signs, as the sign of leakage might not be as obvious as a pool of liquid on the floor.

4. Problems switching on the air conditioner

If you can’t switch on your AC unit you might initially attribute it to something as simple as the batteries in the remote control going flat. But this can actually be a much more serious problem. If your AC unit is not switching on or has problems starting, it could be because the circuit breaker is tripping.

This can be due to the compressor going bad. If this issue only happens once or twice, it may be nothing to worry about, but if the AC unit consistently fails to start it is a sign that the compressor needs to be serviced or replaced.

Don’t ignore the signs that your AC air compressor is bad. Have your unit regularly serviced and talk to a Bell professional if you notice any of the above signs.

It may be a problem with a simple DIY solution. However, you may need to call a professional from Bell Home Solutions if it’s a failing AC compressor.
