How to Change an Air Filter in Your HVAC System

The arrival of fall means your air conditioner will be seeing less and less use as your heating system steps up to handle the job of keeping your home comfortable. That makes this time of year an ideal opportunity to perform a little TLC on your HVAC system, to help ensure that it performs as efficiently as possible. Ideally, you should schedule a maintenance session from a qualified HVAC service to help correct any little problems that may crop up (as well as checking for lager issues that may be brewing). But if you’ve already done so in the past 12 months (at the beginning of summer, for example), you can still take a few steps to keep the system running at its peak.

Changing the air filter on the heater or air conditioner is a relatively simple task that anyone can do. Most filters can be changed out very easily and replacements are available at any hardware store or home improvement center. That helps it stay clean or dirt and will prevent blockages, allowing it to do its job more efficiently. The steps to replacing an air filter are as follows:

  • Make sure the unit is turned off.
  • Unlatch the grill supporting the filter and swing it open.
  • Remove the old filter and throw it away: ideally in an outdoor trash can.
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe any excess dust away from the filter’s frame.
  • Fit the new filter into place and latch it.
  • Close the grill and latch it.
  • Turn your unit back on.

If you’re uncertain about the size of the filter, it pays to remove the old one and measure it before purchasing a new one.
