Components of a Ductless Air Conditioner
A ductless system has two main components: the outdoor unit and the indoor blower. There are usually multiple blowers placed indoors, as a single outdoor unit can support up to 4 indoor blowers.
The outdoor unit of a ductless system is very similar to that of a traditional split-system air conditioner: it holds the compressor and condenser, and blows out the hot air that has been removed from your home. The difference comes with the indoor unit: in a traditional split-system AC, the indoor blower is usually placed above the furnace, and houses the evaporator and blower fan. With a ductless system, each individual unit has its own blower fan, evaporator coils and filter, just on a much smaller scale.
How a Ductless System Works
A ductless system works very much the same as a traditional split-system air conditioner; the difference is that it delivers the cool air in a different way.
In a ductless system, the indoor air blower is mounted against a wall, hung from a ceiling or placed free-standing in a room so that it can blow cool air into the space; it just needs to be close to an exterior wall to connect to the outside unit. To connect the indoor blowers to the outdoor unit, a small hole is drilled through the wall so that a conduit can connect the two components. The refrigerant goes directly back and forth between the indoor blower and outdoor unit, another slight difference between the ductless system and regular split-system. The system turns on when an indoor blower starts, and the regular air conditioning cycle begins.

- Flexible placement – the indoor blower in a ductless system is a little over a ½ foot long (about 7 inches) and is approximately 2 inches deep. The size of the blower gives a great deal of flexibility when it comes to placement in a room.
- Very quiet – because ductless systems need an indoor blower to work, these blowers were designed to operate very quietly.
