Winterize Your Air Conditioner Today

Dependable Service Since 1926

We’re well past the point where your air conditioner will be needed for the winter, and most homes in the area have already switched to heating instead of air conditioning to keep their homes comfortable. But that’s just one step. If you haven’t already, you should strongly consider winterizing your air conditioner before the weather gets any colder. It will help your system better endure the wear and tear of the cold months, and ensure that it’s ready to go ass soon as you need it next spring. The following steps will help you do so.

  1. Remove anything surrounding the outdoor portion of the unit, for a space of at least two feet. This includes anything you may have stacked near the unit, but also includes leaves, twigs and similar detritus. They tend to build up as the trees in your yard shed their leaves during the fall. Keep up with it and make sure the area is kept clear.
  2. Shut off the power to the air conditioner. If you can, do so using the appropriate switch in your circuit box. Most air conditioners can be shut off manually as well. Doing so prevents it from turning on accidentally during the winter, which can damage it.
  3. Cover the outdoor portion of the unit. You can buy fitted covers at any hardware store or home improvement center. If that isn’t an option, a simple waterproof tarp will do. Make sure the covering is secured against gusts of wind and the like, and will stay covered all winter. This will protect the unit against inclement weather and prevent blown twigs from slipping inside of it.
