Two Reasons Why Your Water Heater Isn’t Heating

Dependable Service Since 1926

Taking an ice-cold shower may be held up as some sort of expression of toughness by some people, but it’s also extremely unpleasant. Most of us don’t want to start or end the day like that. So, it can be more than a little obnoxious when your water heater refuses to provide you with hot water. There are a couple of different reasons why this might be happening, most or all of which will require professional water heater repair services in Denver, CO

The Pilot Light is Out

The most common explanation (and the easiest to deal with) is that the pilot light has blown out. More modern systems may be moving away from standing gas flame pilot lights, but plenty of water heaters still use them. The pilot light is the flame that lights the rest of the burner assembly, generating the heat that actually warms the water in the system. If the pilot light blows out, the system can’t start. If your pilot light is out, relight it and see if that fixes the problem (after your system has had time to build up a supply of hot water again.) If the pilot light keeps blowing out, or the system still isn’t providing hot water, the issue is more serious.

Sediment Buildup

If it’s been a while since your last maintenance appointment, it could be that your system has sediment buildup in the tank. This can insulate the tank from the burner assembly, preventing it from heating the water. This is a more likely possibility if your home has a hard water problem. The sediment will need to be flushed out before the system can return to proper operation.
