Lime Scale, and How to Defend Against It

Dependable Service Since 1926

There are quite a few different problems that can afflict a home’s plumbing system. One of the most common, and most damaging, problems is lime scale. If you’re not careful, you can have your entire plumbing system compromised by advanced lime scale. Read on to find out where lime scale comes from, and what you can do about it.

Hard Water

Lime scale is formed by hard water, which is water with a higher-than-normal concentration of magnesium and calcium particles in it. As the water flows through the pipes in your home, it will deposit these particles on the walls. Advanced deposits of these minerals are referred to as “lime scale,” and slowly build towards the center of the pipe. This restricts the flow of water through the pipe down to a trickle, severely compromising the efficiency of the system. If the lime scale is not detected and removed in time, it will harden, making it nearly impossible to remove without damaging the pipe. At that point, the best thing to do is to replace the affected pipe.

Treating Lime Scale

The best way to deal with lime scale is to prevent it from happening altogether. The best way to do that is by installing a water softener in your home’s water line. Water softeners use a variety of different techniques to remove the excess magnesium and calcium particles from the home’s water supply. Some replace the particles with salt, while others use ultra-thin membranes to strain out any larger particles that may be present in the water. Talk to a professional about which water treatment system can serve your needs best.
